Experience a close encounter with the Phoenix of our Tropical Cloud Forest, The Quetzal (holy bird of the Mayans), visiting the Trogón Lodge natural trails, located near

Cerro de la Muerte , in San Gerardo de Dota at 7000 ft. altitude.
Our most dedicated naturalist experts, who have discovered an ecological niche in which these birds remain all year round, have researched this area for various years. This sector in which we will hike and be overwhelmed at the same time, the largest protected area in all of Costa Rica. It is composed of 13 different units that sum up a total preserve of 95,000 hectares. The area that we will visit is one of the highest points of this Talamanca Mountain Range, a large spinal bone of tectonic formation at 10,000 ft. of elevation, which is part of the Continental Divide.
This highlands are the natural habitat for an immense diversity of flora and avifauna, like the Cripresillo (oak, querqus costarricense) this particular especies are endemic, in other words, only to be found in this part of the world. Also to be found, are hundred of species of bromeliads, lichen, moss, ferns, and a multitude of orchids and colorful flowers such as guerneracias.
Besides the Quetzal, we'll also see the unique silky flycatcher; the coppery headed emerald hummingbird, the cerise throated hummingbird and the peg-billed finch, all them endemic to the area

Itinerary
07:00 am Departure from San José, heading southwest, through the Pan-American. Highway, passing by carrot and potato farms and the country side. Go up Cerro de la Muerte, at an altitude of 3200 meters above sea level and continue down to Trogón Lodge.
08:45 am Typical breakfast, coffee and such and time to relax before the hike
09:30 am After a typical breakfast, we´ll immediately initiate our hike through the natural trails.
12:00 pm Lunch at the hotel, after lunch we will have time to relax and admire this heavenly environment, before we initiate our trip back to the central plateau.
02:30 pm Approximate return time to San José, driving past the old capital city. Of Cartago, visit the Church of the Patron of Costa Rica, the "Virgin of Los Angeles" and the Ruins of Cartago.
04:15 pm Approximate arrival time to San José
