Maleku Indigenous Reserve CRTSAVR-110

Centuries ago, The Maleku Tribe - a branch of the Chibchas -, where divided in 23 different groups, however in the last hundred years, their population has decrease substantially; today we can find only three at Palenque El Sol, Margarita and the bigger one: Tonjibe, all this reserves are located in Los Guatuzos lowlands.

The malekus at Palenque Tonjibe had open their harts and their community to all visitors, this way, sharing with us a little of their culture, language and traditions, they are giving us the chance to know the roots of our Costa Rican been.

By taking a hike with a maleku guide through enchanting rainforest and pre-Columbian burial grounds of their native lands, we'll get to learn about medicinal plants, nature from the maleku's point of view and also visit one of their cemeteries. This hike is narrated in the Maleku language (maleku jaica), and translated into English. Actually most malekus speak Spanish, but they also learn about their culture and take classes in maleku jaica since primary school.

Arenal Lake is the largest and the most important lake in Costa Rica, it was man made in 1974 to provide hydroelectric energy for the country. It is also a place where you can find different kinds of resident and migratory birds.

Sometimes mammals can be seen in the surroundings.

This tour offers a combination of the Arenal Lake and the Arenal Volcano, it starts at the Dam, and from there we will have the chance to enjoy a 2-hour boat ride. Going around the lake we will see the burned site of the Arenal Volcano.

Mountain Bike in Arenal CRTSAVR-113


This is one of the tours we offer for those who want to go on a bike trip to the area where the forest, the Arenal Volcano and the Lake meet and leads trough a beautiful trail.


The tour starts from the Arenal Lake Dam, where we take an old trail into the forest.

At the end of the trail we will arrive at the entrance of the Arenal Volcano National Park and then get on the way to the Observatory and back in the main road.


On this trail we will have the chance to see many different birds, for example: Squirrel Cuckoos (Piaya cayana), Keel Billed Toucans (Ramphastos sulfuratus), Crested Guans (Penelope purpurascens), Slaty Tailed Trogons (Trogon massena), Black Headed Trogons (Trogon melanocephalus), Bare Throated Tiger Herons (Tigrisoma mexicanum), Laughing Falcons (Herpetotheres cachinnans); as well as howler monkeys and raccoons.

The amazing biodiversity and the natural beauty of Monteverde Cloud Forest will take you into a fantastic journey to a unique spot on earth.

Journey: After a 2_ hour-drive from the rainforest you will be taken to the wonderful world of the cloud forest.

Our excursion will start by picking you up at your hotel, then a transfer ride on an A/C minibus to Lake Arenal. At the dam, you will board a boat to do a 25 minute-boat ride across the lake up to Rio Chiquito where a 4 X 4 car will be waiting for you to drive you up to the Sky Trek station located at Monteverde Cloud Forest. Here is where the adventure tour starts, get ready for a lifetime experience. Sky Trek is secure system of trails and zip lines in which you glide through the canopy of the forest to see a different perspective of the cloud forest. Sky Trek is similar, in a way, to other canopy tour in Costa Rica, but it incorporates some significant differences such as larger scales with more zip lines and platforms, longer trails, and a suspension bridge. Furthermore, the construction consists of protective and secure materials, including metal platforms with mesh-covered steal rails which prevents from falling off or sliding.

• Twenty-two platforms above the canopy, connected by zip lines

• Two canopy observation towers, 22 meters high (72 feet ) and 28 meters high (90 feet)

• 11 cable system, the longest is 750 meters long (2,460 feet), and the shortest is 127 meters long (417 feet)

Upon arriving at our base you will be served a delicious breakfast in view of the Arenal Volcano. You trip begins with a 30 minutes 4x4 drive into a tropical Rainforest outside the town of La Fortuna, in the Arenal Volcano . We stop to see many different indigenous plants and animals along the way. At the end of the trip you can enjoy the warmth of Casona Río Fortuna, a historic site with an interesting background. At the Casona you will enjoy a delicious, typical country-style prepared lunch from the wood stove.
