NORTH -PACIFIC

Gulf of Papagayo

The Gulf of Papagayo, to the south of that peninsula, features accessible beaches, many of which slope down into the tranquil waters of Culebra Bay.

That's calm and crystalline waters offer excellent conditions for swimming, skin diving, windsurfing and other aquatic diversions. Some of the country's newest luxury hotels overlook Culebra Bay from such beaches as Panama.

El Coco Beach (not the same as Coco Island )

Nosara Beach is located in Guanacaste, at the district of Nicoya. Tambor-Montezuma-Cabo Blanco

Visitors and residents alike also go to Puntarenas in order to catch the ferry that crosses to the beaches along the Peninsula Nicoya's eastern and southern shores. At this point in time, flying into the Tambor airstrip or going by water are the fastest options, but a bridge is under construction that will offer another travel alternative. In addition to beautiful beaches, the area boasts quite a few private and national wildlife refuges such as the Karen Morgenson Reserve, Curu National Wildlife Refuge and Cabo Blanco Wildlife Refuge, to name a few. In recent years there has developed a great understanding of the importance of preservation in the area, and the many private reserves have created a biological corridor for the region's rich diversity of wildlife. Between these refuges, visitors can enjoy a wide range of habitats, from mangrove to rainforest to lagoon, and it isn't difficult to spot howler and white-faced monkeys, as well as quite a few other mammalian and reptilian residents. Three kinds of sea turtles emerge from the gentle waters of the picturesque bay that forms part of the Curu refuge.

Between Playa Tambor and Cabo Blanco Wildlife Refuge lies Playa Montezuma. The small streams flowing into the rocky coastline of this area create numerous waterfalls and tide pools just waiting for exploration, and the sandy beach is a perfect spot to relax and watch the antics of pelicans and other sea birds. Sure-footed adventurers can hike to a series of spectacular waterfalls about 30 minutes from the town of Montezuma.
